Overview

Freelancers often juggle multiple tools to manage invoices, expenses, receipts, taxes, and reporting. Harbor was designed as a unified bookkeeping platform that brings these workflows together into a single, easy-to-use experience, reducing administrative overhead and making quarterly tax filing less stressful.

The Challenge

Managing freelance finances often means switching between spreadsheets, accounting software, cloud storage, and government tax portals. This fragmented workflow makes it difficult to stay organised, monitor cash flow, and prepare for VAT deadlines.

The challenge was to design a product that simplifies financial management without overwhelming users with accounting complexity.

My Approach

Rather than designing isolated screens, I focused on building a connected product ecosystem where every module contributes to a single source of truth.

Key design decisions

  • Connecting invoices, income and payments automatically.
  • Linking expenses with receipts and assets.
  • Automatically calculating VAT and tax summaries from financial records.
  • Providing reports generated directly from live business data.
  • Designing reusable components for scalability and consistency.

Solution

Harbor brings together the essential tools freelancers need in one place. The result is a workflow where information only needs to be entered once and is reflected across the entire product.

  • Dashboard with live financial insights.
  • Income and expense tracking.
  • Client and project management.
  • Invoice management.
  • VAT and tax centre.
  • Asset and receipt management.
  • Business reporting.
  • Notification and reminder system.

Outcome

The final product evolved into a production-ready bookkeeping platform powered by a live database instead of mock data. Every financial record updates dashboards, reports and tax calculations automatically, reducing manual work while providing freelancers with a clear overview of their business.

Reflection

Harbor reinforced the importance of designing systems rather than individual screens. Beyond interface design, the project required thinking about data relationships, financial workflows, scalability and how complex business logic could be presented in a way that feels approachable to non-accountants.
